Sentry vs Rollbar (and where BugTape fits)
Sentry and Rollbar compared on free plans, entry prices, replay, AI fixers (Seer and Resolve), MCP servers and self-hosting, plus where BugTape fits.
Short answer: Pick Sentry if you want one platform for errors, tracing, logs, session replay and uptime, a hosted MCP server, and the option to self-host. Its free Developer plan covers one user and 5K errors, and Team is $26 a month billed yearly. Pick Rollbar if you mainly want error monitoring priced by usage, with unlimited users and 1K replays on the free plan. Its Essentials plan starts at $9 a month. Both now have an AI fixer: Seer for Sentry, Resolve for Rollbar. BugTape does a narrower job. I built it to give your own coding agent the user's side of a browser bug, and it runs fine next to either one.
No account: npx -y bugtape --help prints the commands and does not sign you in. The demo MCP at https://app.bugtape.ai/demo/mcp needs no sign-in. Your own workspace needs one.

Facts table
| Sentry | Rollbar | BugTape | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | Errors plus observability across web, backend and mobile | Error monitoring with replay and deploy tracking | Browser bugs real users hit, handed to a coding agent |
| Free plan | Developer: 1 user, 5K errors, 50 replays, 5M spans, 5GB logs, 30-day lookback | 5K occurrences and 1K replays a month, 30-day retention, unlimited users, no card | 100 new issues a month, 1 project, 3 members, 150 credits, no card |
| Entry paid plan | Team: $26/mo billed yearly, $29 monthly; unlimited users, 50K errors | Essentials: from $9/mo for 10K occurrences, 90-day retention, 4,000 AI credits a month | Prepaid credits $10 = 2,000 (no subscription), or Pro $29/mo |
| How price grows | By errors, replays, spans and logs, plus pay-as-you-go overage | By occurrences; replay is a paid add-on on paid plans | By credits; agent reads are free on Pro |
| Session replay | Yes | Yes | Browser only, rebuilt from DOM events, a short buffer around each failure |
| AI fixer | Seer: root cause, autofix PRs and code review; $40 a month per active contributor on paid plans | Resolve: writes a fix, runs your tests in an ephemeral environment, opens a PR (open beta) | None built in. Your own agent reads the evidence and opens the PR |
| MCP server | Hosted, Streamable HTTP at mcp.sentry.dev, OAuth | Official, local stdio, MIT (@rollbar/mcp-server), read-only unless you give it a write token | Hosted at app.bugtape.ai/mcp, OAuth or bt_pat_ token, every plan |
| Self-host | Yes, free under the FSL licence; Seer and other AI features are not available self-hosted | Not listed on its pricing pages | No, hosted only, data in Sydney |
How I'd choose
- You want one tool for the whole stack. Sentry. Tracing, logs and uptime sit beside the errors.
- You have many people and a small budget. Rollbar. Its free plan has unlimited users and its paid plans are priced by usage, not seats.
- You need to self-host. Sentry. Rollbar doesn't list a self-hosted option.
- You want an AI fixer from the same vendor. Both have one. Seer is billed per contributor. Resolve is in open beta and uses Rollbar's AI credits.
- You want your own coding agent to work through real-user browser bugs. Add BugTape next to whichever one you keep. It doesn't do tracing, logs or deploy tracking.
Where the MCP servers differ
Sentry hosts its server: you add a URL and sign in with OAuth. Rollbar's server runs on your machine over stdio with a project token. Both give an agent issues and stack traces, and Rollbar's can also return replay data.
BugTape's server is hosted too. Its get_repro_context returns one occurrence's report text, timeline, failed request, console and stack. ack_bug with working, then with a prUrl, shows your team that the agent picked the bug up and opened a pull request. When you approve the fix, BugTape anchors it to that release, and a later recurrence from real users reopens it as a regression.
FAQ
Is Sentry or Rollbar cheaper?
At the entry level, Rollbar: Essentials starts at $9 a month and its free plan has unlimited users. Sentry's Team plan is $26 a month billed yearly. Check both pricing pages for your own volume.
Do Sentry and Rollbar both have session replay?
Yes. Sentry includes 50 replays on its free plan. Rollbar includes 1,000 replays a month on Free and sells replay as an add-on on paid plans.
Which has the better MCP server?
They differ more than they compete. Sentry's is hosted with OAuth. Rollbar's runs locally over stdio and can return replay data. Pick the one that matches the tracker you already use.
Can I use BugTape with Sentry or Rollbar?
Yes. BugTape adds its own browser SDK and hosted MCP server. It doesn't read Sentry or Rollbar data, and it doesn't accept their SDKs.
