BugTape vs Rollbar
Rollbar has replay, AI root cause, an official MCP server and Resolve, a fix agent that tests PRs. BugTape hands real-user browser bugs to your own agent.
Short answer: keep Rollbar if you want a mature error platform with session replay, AI root-cause analysis, an official MCP server and Resolve, its fix agent that runs your tests before it opens a pull request. Pick BugTape when the bugs that matter are the ones real users hit in the browser, you want your own coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) to pick them up over hosted MCP, and you want the fix checked against what real users hit after the next release. Using both is a fair answer.
No account: npx -y bugtape --help prints the commands and does not sign you in. The demo MCP at https://app.bugtape.ai/demo/mcp needs no sign-in. Your own workspace needs one.

What Rollbar publishes
- Official MCP server.
@rollbar/mcp-server, MIT licensed, runs locally over stdio. It gives your agent errors, stack traces, deploys and session replays. Setup is documented for Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI and Junie. Read-only by default; write actions need a write-scoped token. - Session replay. Its MCP server can pull replay data (navigation path, clicks and DOM state) into the agent's context next to the error.
- AI Root Cause Analysis. Rollbar's docs say it investigates the error across the projects and services you use to find where the failure started.
- Resolve. Rollbar's fix agent reads the error, writes a fix, runs your configured tests and linters in an ephemeral environment and opens a pull request with the test results attached. It never merges its own work. Rollbar says it is in open public beta, available on every plan including Free, and needs the Rollbar GitHub App and an AI credit subscription (credits start at 15,000 for $5, no per-seat charge). Rollbar also says not every test suite can be stood up in that environment yet.
- Free tier. 5,000 occurrences and 1,000 replays a month, plus a 14-day trial. Check Rollbar's pricing for current plans.
What BugTape does
BugTape does not record every visit. The browser SDK keeps a short buffer and sends it with an uncaught error, a failed or hung request, or a user's report. Repeats of the same failure become one issue. DOM replay is rebuilt from events; it is not a screen video. Server SDKs (Node.js, Python) add route, service and release.
Your agent connects once to hosted MCP at https://app.bugtape.ai/mcp (OAuth, or a bt_pat_ token). list_recommended_critical is the ranked inbox. get_repro_context returns the timeline, failed request, console and stack. ack_bug with working, then with prUrl, shows your team Picked up and PR opened. A human reviews the pull request. When you approve the fix, it is anchored to that release; if real users hit the same failure on a later release, BugTape reopens it as a regression.

|---|---|---|
| Error grouping | Yes | Yes |
| Session replay | Yes, and readable over its MCP server | DOM replay around each failure, not every visit |
| MCP | Official, local stdio, MIT (@rollbar/mcp-server) | Hosted HTTP at app.bugtape.ai/mcp, OAuth or bt_pat_ |
| AI root cause | Yes, AI Root Cause Analysis | No Seer-style root-cause engine; your own agent reads the evidence |
| Who writes the fix | Resolve (open beta), or your own agent via MCP | Your own coding agent |
| Fix check | Resolve runs your tests in an ephemeral environment before the PR; you merge | Fix anchored to the release; a recurrence from real users on a later release reopens as a regression |

When each fits
Use Rollbar when you want one mature platform for errors across your stack, replay, AI root-cause analysis and a fix agent that runs your tests. Use BugTape when you want real-user browser failures and user reports grouped into one issue your own agent can read over hosted MCP, with team-visible acknowledgement and a regression check after the release. BugTape is not a Rollbar replacement for backend monitoring or deploy tracking.
FAQ
Does Rollbar have an MCP server?
Yes. Rollbar publishes an official MCP server (@rollbar/mcp-server, MIT licensed) that gives agents errors, stack traces, deploys and session replays.
Does Rollbar verify AI fixes?
Yes, before the pull request. Rollbar says Resolve runs your tests in an ephemeral environment and attaches the results to the pull request. BugTape checks something different: whether real users hit the same failure after the fix ships in a later release.
Is BugTape a Rollbar replacement?
Not for backend monitoring or deploy tracking. BugTape fits beside Rollbar when you want real-user browser bugs handed to your own coding agent.
Can I try BugTape free?
Yes, on the Free plan with no credit card.
