Migration
Moving from Highlight.io to BugTape
BugTape is not a full replacement for Highlight.io. It does not record every session, and it has no log search or custom event tracking. It records what happened before an error, groups reports of the same failure into one issue and gives the evidence to your coding agent. If that is the part of Highlight.io you used, this page shows how to switch.
What carries over
- BugTape records browser errors, failed requests and console output automatically.
- Each report includes a replay of the page before the error, rebuilt from recorded DOM events. It covers up to ten minutes before the report, not the whole session.
- User identification:
H.identify()becomesidentify(). - Server errors: use the Node.js or Python SDK, or send them to
POST /v1/ingestwith your project key.
What does not carry over
- Full session recording. BugTape only keeps the recording that comes with a bug report.
- Custom events and metrics. There is no equivalent of
H.track(). - Log search, traces and dashboards.
Switch in three steps
- Create a free project and copy its project key from Setup.
- Remove the Highlight.io SDK and its
H.init()call. - Add BugTape once, after your consent banner allows it:
<script type="module">
import { init, identify } from 'https://app.bugtape.ai/bugtape.mjs';
init({ apiKey: 'bt_live_your_key_here' });
identify({ email: user.email, userId: user.id });
</script>
With a bundler, install the same SDK from npm instead:
npm install @bugtape/sdk
import { init, identify } from '@bugtape/sdk';
init({ apiKey: 'bt_live_your_key_here' });
identify({ email: user.email, userId: user.id });
Throw a test error and open it in the console to check the setup. The quickstart has the details.
