BugTape vs Bugsnag
Keep Bugsnag for mobile stability and on-premise. BugTape groups browser bugs with replay and the failed request, and hands them to your agent over MCP.
Short answer: Keep Bugsnag if you ship mobile apps and track crash-free releases, need on-premise hosting, or want spans for app start and screen loads. Pick BugTape when the bugs that matter happen in the browser, you want the user's steps, the failed request and the console attached to each one, and you want your own coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) to read them over a hosted MCP server. Running both is a fair answer: Bugsnag for the mobile apps, BugTape for the web app.
No account: npx -y bugtape --help prints the commands and does not sign you in. The demo MCP at https://app.bugtape.ai/demo/mcp needs no sign-in. Your own workspace needs one.

Facts
| Bugsnag (its pages, 2026-11-02) | BugTape (our docs) | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Error and stability monitoring, strongest on mobile | Browser bugs real users hit, handed to a coding agent |
| Free plan | 1 user, 7.5K events and 1M spans a month, 7-day retention | 100 new issues a month, 1 project, 3 members, 7-day evidence, 150 credits, no card |
| Paid | Select and Preferred; see bugsnag.com/pricing | Prepaid credits $10 = 2,000; Pro $29/mo |
| Mobile | Its main strength, with stability scores per release | Swift package for iOS and macOS: handled errors and breadcrumbs, no fatal crash capture |
| Performance | Spans for app start, screen loads and web vitals | None |
| Session replay | Not listed on its pricing page | DOM replay around each failure, rebuilt from events; not screen video and not every visit |
| User bug reports | Not listed on its pricing page | Optional report button; reports group into the same issue as automatic captures |
| MCP | @smartbear/mcp on npm, run with a personal auth token; bundled on on-premise installs | Hosted at app.bugtape.ai/mcp, OAuth or bt_pat_ token, every plan |
| Fix loop | Your agent reads errors over MCP | ack_bug with working, then prUrl; the fix is anchored to a release and reopens as a regression if real users hit it again |
| Hosting | SaaS, or on-premise on Preferred | Hosted only, data in Sydney |
When to keep Bugsnag
Keep it for mobile. Stability scores per release are the reason most teams choose Bugsnag, and BugTape has nothing like them. BugTape's Swift package can't see a fatal crash. Keep it too if you need on-premise hosting or performance spans.
When BugTape fits
BugTape fits the web side. The browser SDK keeps a short buffer and sends it with an uncaught error, a failed or hung request, or a user's report. Repeats of the same failure become one issue with the replay, the failed request, the console and the stack. Node.js and Python SDKs cover your servers.
Your agent connects once with npx -y bugtape connect claude (or cursor, codex). It reads the ranked inbox with list_recommended_critical, then get_repro_context for one occurrence. It marks the issue as picked up and adds the pull request URL. A person reviews the pull request before anything ships.
Running both
BugTape doesn't read Bugsnag data or accept Bugsnag's SDK, so the two don't conflict. A common split is Bugsnag in the iOS and Android apps and BugTape in the web app. Give your agent both MCP servers and tell it which one covers which app.
FAQ
Is BugTape a Bugsnag alternative?
For a web app, yes. For mobile crash reporting and stability scores, no. BugTape's Swift package captures handled errors only.
Does Bugsnag have session replay?
Its pricing page doesn't list session replay on 2 November 2026. BugTape records a DOM replay around each browser failure.
Does Bugsnag have an MCP server?
Yes. SmartBear publishes @smartbear/mcp on npm, and on-premise installs bundle an MCP server.
Can I try BugTape free?
Yes. The Free plan needs no credit card and includes MCP access.
