BugTape vs PostHog for error tracking
Compare PostHog and BugTape on error tracking, replay, MCP access and cost. When to keep PostHog, when BugTape fits, and how to test both.
Choose PostHog when you want errors alongside product analytics and session replay. Choose BugTape when you want a focused inbox of grouped failures with evidence for a coding agent. Both offer MCP access. BugTape does not replace PostHog's analytics or feature flags.
No account is needed to inspect the BugTape demo MCP or run npx -y bugtape --help. Connecting your own workspace requires sign-in and approval.

What differs
| Question | PostHog | BugTape |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main job? | Product analytics, replay and other product tools, including error tracking. | Group supported failures and keep the evidence needed to investigate them. |
| What context comes with an error? | Its docs describe the affected user's replay, events and properties attached to an issue. | A browser report can include a short DOM replay, failed requests, console events and a stack. Server reports carry their supported context. |
| Can an AI coding agent read errors? | Yes. PostHog documents issue and stack-trace access over MCP. | Yes. An authorized agent reads a ranked inbox and calls get_repro_context over MCP. |
| Does it replace product analytics? | PostHog includes analytics. | No funnels, heatmaps, experiments or feature flags. Keep your analytics tool. |
| Does it capture every visit? | Replay depends on your PostHog recording and sampling settings. | No. The browser keeps a short buffer and sends it with a supported failure or user report. |
| Is MCP free? | The hosted MCP connection and tool calls are free. Its docs note that some tools use models and can incur PostHog AI charges. | MCP works on every plan. On Free and Prepaid, each agent read of captured events costs two credits; Pro includes those reads. |
When to keep PostHog
If you already use PostHog, first try its error tracking with the replay and product events you already collect. Its own MCP can put issues and stack traces into your coding agent. You do not need a second tool simply to obtain MCP access.
PostHog is the broader choice when the question includes what visitors did before and after a failure, how a funnel changed, or which feature flag was active. Check its error tracking documentation and MCP guide against your workflow.
When BugTape fits
BugTape fits a smaller job: collect supported failures that users might never report, group repeat occurrences, then give your authorized agent the evidence for one issue. You review the proposed change. A linked pull request is not proof that the fix works.
Browser replay is reconstructed from DOM events. It is not screen video. Inputs are masked by default, but visible page text can still be recorded. Node.js and Python capture server context. Swift is a handled-error alpha, without fatal-crash capture or native replay. Read platform coverage and privacy limits before adding capture.
A practical comparison in your own app
- Use a test project and a page with synthetic data. Decide what must never be recorded.
- Trigger one known failure, such as a test checkout returning HTTP 500. Check which tools capture that failure with your chosen settings.
- Trigger it again. Compare the grouped issue and the two occurrences, rather than counting alerts.
- Open the captured context. Check the failing request, stack and replay where supported.
- Ask the authorized coding agent to explain the cause from that evidence. Review its proposed patch, then rerun the failing action.
Use the local browser demo to try BugTape's capture flow without signing up. That demo sends no report and dispatches no agent. To compare actual production capture, install each product in your controlled test app.
Cost and running both
Check PostHog pricing for the products and usage you need. Its analytics, replay and error tracking are separate products; do not compare a single free allowance with the whole bill. BugTape pricing lists the issue, retention, member and credit limits. Free is $0, Prepaid is $10 for 2,000 credits, and Pro is $29 a month.
You can keep PostHog for analytics and evaluate BugTape for failure evidence. If both record the same browser, check consent, masking, sampling and transfer size together. Two SDKs add work even when each works alone.
FAQ
Does PostHog have error tracking and MCP?
Yes. PostHog documents grouped issues with replay context and MCP access to issues and stack traces. MCP is not unique to BugTape.
Can BugTape replace PostHog?
Only if your requirement is the narrower failure-evidence workflow. BugTape does not replace product analytics, session-wide analytics, feature flags or experiments.
Can I evaluate BugTape without an account?
Yes. The demo MCP uses synthetic data and needs no sign-in. The browser demo captures locally. Your own workspace requires sign-in and approval before an agent can read its evidence.
Which is faster in my application?
Measure both SDKs in your own application with the same capture settings and traffic. A vendor homepage Lighthouse score measures that homepage, not its SDK overhead in your product.
