# BugTape vs Sentry for coding agents

Sentry and BugTape answer different questions. Sentry tells you how the system is behaving, and Seer can suggest a cause inside that workflow. BugTape is the issue loop a coding agent can close: evidence in, a pull request out, a human reviews it, and BugTape checks the fix in the next release.

Use both when you already run Sentry. This page does not ask you to leave it.

Most MCP bug tools let an agent read a report. BugTape lets the agent close one: ranked evidence in, a pull request out, a human reviews it, and BugTape checks the fix in the next release.

## Two different jobs

Sentry is an observability platform. Its hosted MCP is at `mcp.sentry.dev`. Seer does root-cause analysis and recommended fixes for a human-in-the-loop coding agent. Sentry also documents Resolve in next release and a Regressed issue status. Those facts are on [Sentry's MCP docs](https://docs.sentry.io/ai/mcp/), the [Seer note](https://blog.sentry.io/seer-mcp-cli-or-coding-agent/), and [issue states](https://docs.sentry.io/product/issues/states-triage/).

BugTape is not LLM observability, and it is not an APM. It groups the same failure into one issue, keeps the browser evidence and the user report with it, and hands that issue to an agent over MCP.

## What Sentry MCP and Seer already do well

Sentry MCP gives an agent production context from the Sentry project you already have. The [Cursor cookbook](https://sentry.io/cookbook/fix-issues-sentry-mcp-cursor/) shows that path. Seer can propose a cause and a fix inside Sentry's own workflow. If your team lives in Sentry and the job is root-cause analysis there, that stack is built for it.

BugTape does not claim Sentry lacks regression detection. Their Regressed status is real.

## What BugTape adds

The loop your agent runs, in tool names:

1. `subscribe_feed` with `urgent_critical`.
2. `list_recommended_critical` (Send to agent handoffs come back under `sentToYou`).
3. `get_repro_context` for the timeline, the failed request, the console and the stack.
4. `ack_bug` with `working`, then again with `prUrl` when the pull request is open.
5. A human reviews the pull request. Agents do not silent-ship.
6. You mark the fix against a release. A later release that hits the same failure reopens it. `listen` can wake an agent when listen is allowed (Pro or prepaid credits). Verified Close needs a different token from the one that proposed the fix (`E_SELF_VERIFY`).

Browser capture can use the hosted module `https://app.bugtape.ai/bugtape.mjs`. DOM replay is rebuilt from DOM events. It is not a screen video. Fatal iOS crash capture is not available.

## Feature matrix

Each cell is a BugTape fact from the public docs, or a pointer to that vendor's own page as of 2026-10-07. This table does not copy Sentry's prices. Read those on [Sentry's pricing page](https://sentry.io/pricing/).

| | Sentry | BugTape |
|---|---|---|
| APM, traces, Seer | Sentry's job. Seer does root-cause analysis for coding agents. [MCP docs](https://docs.sentry.io/ai/mcp/). [Seer note](https://blog.sentry.io/seer-mcp-cli-or-coding-agent/). | BugTape does not do APM, traces, or Seer-style root-cause analysis. |
| Regression after a release | Sentry documents Resolve in next release and a Regressed status. [Issue states](https://docs.sentry.io/product/issues/states-triage/). | A fix you approve is anchored to that report's release. The same failure from a later release reopens as a regression and can alert the team and the agent. |
| Browser evidence | Sentry documents its own replay product. | DOM-event replay, grouping, and a user report button in one inbox. DOM replay is rebuilt from events. It is not a screen video. |
| Agent progress the team sees | Sentry MCP gives the agent production context. [Cursor cookbook](https://sentry.io/cookbook/fix-issues-sentry-mcp-cursor/). | `ack_bug` with `working`, then again with `prUrl`. The team sees Picked up and PR opened. A human reviews the pull request. |
| Free-plan MCP | Check Sentry's current plan. This page does not state their price. | MCP works on Free. Each agent read of a bug's captured events costs 2 credits. Free includes 150 credits a month. On Pro, those reads are free. |
| Where data lives | Check Sentry's regions on their trust pages. | The app runs on Fly.io in Sydney. Postgres is Neon on AWS in ap-southeast-2. Email and payments may be outside Australia. [Trust](/trust/). |
| Drop-in Sentry DSN | A Sentry DSN talks to Sentry. | Not shipped. BugTape does not accept a Sentry DSN. |

Ordinary issue changes (`update_bug`, `merge_bugs`, `delete_bug`, `add_comment`) stay human-only for an agent token. [MCP tools](/docs/mcp-tools/).

## When Seer and Sentry MCP are enough

Stay on Sentry alone when the team is already deep in Sentry, the agent only needs Seer's root-cause pass, and you are not asking for a second inbox. That is a valid setup.

## When BugTape's job is the one you want

Add BugTape when you want Send to agent or auto-notify, a pull-request URL recorded on the issue, a release check, and an agent wake when the failure returns (when listen is allowed: Pro or prepaid credits). Python and Streamlit reports can sit in the same inbox as the browser. [Streamlit error tracking](/streamlit/error-tracking/).

## Use both

Keep Sentry, or keep Datadog, for observability. Add BugTape for the close loop. The same idea next to Datadog is written up in [Keep Datadog, add BugTape](/docs/beat-datadog-agent-loop/). The general compare page is [Compare](/compare/).

## Other MCP bug tools in the same search

BugTape is not the only product with an MCP read path. [BugMojo](/compare/bugmojo/), [Ybug](https://ybug.io/docs/mcp), [Bugfender](https://bugfender.com/blog/bugfender-mcp/), [BugCapture](https://www.npmjs.com/package/bugcapture-mcp), trycatch, TraceBug and agenterr also ship agent or MCP paths. A longer Sentry-MCP page is [Sentry MCP alternative](/alternatives/sentry-mcp/).

## Try the loop

Install BugTape MCP. Do not treat this as a migration off Sentry.

```bash
npx -y bugtape connect cursor
```

The same command accepts `claude`, `codex`, `grok` or `grok-bot`. Client steps: [Connect Cursor](/connect/cursor/) · [Install in Claude Code](/install/claude-code/) · [MCP install](/docs/mcp-install/).

[Start free](/console/register?utm_source=bugtape_seo&utm_campaign=vs-sentry) — no card. The Week-1 install post is [Install BugTape MCP](/blog/install-bugtape-mcp-claude-cursor-codex/).

Your team reviews the PR. Agents do not silent-ship.
